US, Sep 08 (V7N) – The United States has alerted its allies that it suspects Iran has delivered short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for its conflict in Ukraine, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Details regarding the number of missiles and the timing of the transfers remain undisclosed.

While the White House has not confirmed the missile transfers, it has reiterated its concerns about Iran’s increasing support for Russia. National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett warned that such transfers would mark a significant escalation in Iran’s involvement in the conflict and could lead to more Ukrainian civilian casualties. He also noted that this partnership threatens European security and underscores Iran’s destabilizing impact globally.

The report emerges as Russia contends with Ukraine's counter-offensive, which has recaptured approximately 500 square miles (1,300 kilometers) of territory in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pressing allies to provide Western missiles for deeper strikes into Russian territory.

Iran has denied the accusations, reiterating its stance against providing military aid that exacerbates human suffering and conflicts. An Iranian statement from its UN mission condemned arms supplies and called for an end to such actions by all nations.

CIA Director William Burns, speaking in London, expressed concern over the growing defense ties among Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, describing them as a significant threat to Ukraine and Western allies in the Middle East.

Previous US intelligence disclosures revealed that North Korea has supplied ammunition and missiles to Russia, while Iran has provided attack drones and helped set up a drone-manufacturing facility. Although China has not supplied weapons directly, it has increased sales of technology crucial for Russian military production.

The US administration has been cautious about a possible Iran-Russia deal. In January, officials indicated that while a formal agreement had not yet been completed, negotiations were ongoing. Last September, Iran showcased its ballistic missile systems to a senior Russian defense official, heightening US concerns.

Efforts to curb Iran’s missile-related activities include guiding private companies to avoid inadvertently supporting Iran’s missile development.

President Joe Biden is expected to discuss continued support for Ukraine with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting at the White House on Friday.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported on the US intelligence assessment.
