Rangamati, Oct 01 (V7N) – A boat capsized in Kaptai Lake at Longadu upazila of Rangamati during rough weather on Tuesday night, leaving three people dead and a five-year-old child missing. The missing child is the daughter of Salma Begum, one of the victims whose body has been recovered.
According to local sources, the victims were all residents of Gathachhara FIDC area under Mainimukh Union in Longadu. The accident occurred when local resident Asir Uddin was returning home with his wife, child, younger brother’s wife, and her child after visiting Gulshakhali. As their engine-run boat approached near their home, it was struck by sudden high waves and sank in the turbulent lake waters.
Following the incident, locals managed to recover two bodies and rescue one survivor. Later, the body of Salma Begum was also retrieved, while her five-year-old child remains untraced.
Fire Service divers from Rangamati, along with local volunteers, launched a rescue operation that is still underway to recover the missing child. Members of the Longadu Army Zone are also assisting in the search efforts.
Officials said the strong winds and sudden waves in Kaptai Lake have been increasingly dangerous for small boats, particularly during night travel. Authorities have urged locals to remain cautious and avoid night journeys in the lake during adverse weather conditions.
