Madaripur, Nov 15 (V7N) – Two people were killed and several others injured when a passenger bus lost control and crashed into a roadside tree in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur on Thursday night. The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on the Dhaka–Barishal Highway in the Bhurghata–Kundubari area.
The deceased were identified as Nuruzzaman, 45, the bus supervisor, and Maruf, 24, the assistant. According to the Fire Service and local residents, an Eagle Paribahan bus travelling from Dhaka towards Barishal veered off the highway and hit a large tree with force. Maruf died at the scene, while a severely injured Nuruzzaman was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where he died on the way.
Police from Kalkini Station and a Fire Service unit rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations with assistance from locals. Confirming the incident, Mamun Al Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Mostafapur Highway Police Station, said Maruf’s body had been recovered and sent to Madaripur Sadar Hospital morgue. Legal action is underway.
In a separate incident earlier on Friday morning, police recovered the floating body of a missing man from a pond in Suryamani village of the same upazila. The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 35, son of Samsul Haque from Snanghata village in Bashgari Union.
According to police and local sources, Saiful had left home on Wednesday afternoon and had not returned. Locals spotted a body floating in a pond next to Kazi Bari in Suryamani and called the emergency number 999. Officers from the Bashgari Police Investigation Center recovered the body after being notified by Kalkini Police Station.
Kalkini Police Station Officer-in-Charge KM Sohel Rana confirmed the recovery and said the body had been sent to Madaripur morgue for autopsy. He added that legal action would be taken if the family files a complaint.
