Rajshahi, Dec 12 (V7N) – A tragic incident unfolded in Tanore upazila, Rajshahi, where a young boy named Sajid fell into a narrow, eight-inch-wide borehole and was recovered dead after being trapped for 32 hours.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director of Operations and Maintenance of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Sajid was rescued late Thursday night around 9:00 p.m. and immediately transported to Tanore Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Koelhat Purba Para village while workers were excavating a deep tube well. The borehole, intended for water installation, was left unguarded and dangerously narrow. Sajid accidentally fell into the hole, becoming trapped underground.

The Fire Service launched a rescue operation at 2:05 p.m. on Wednesday, deploying multiple teams and specialized equipment to reach the child. Rescuers faced extremely difficult conditions due to the narrow diameter of the borehole and its depth, which complicated the operation.

Throughout the 32-hour rescue mission, firefighters dug and reinforced the borehole to prevent collapse, ventilated the area, and used sophisticated extraction tools. Despite their tireless efforts, Sajid suffered from prolonged entrapment and lack of oxygen, leading to his death immediately upon recovery.

Local residents and neighbors gathered at the site during the operation, expressing distress over the incident and urging authorities to improve safety measures for open boreholes in rural areas. Community leaders stressed the need for strict regulations and monitoring of excavation work to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This incident has drawn attention to broader safety concerns in rural regions, where unprotected wells and boreholes remain common hazards for children and the community. Authorities have called for increased awareness and preventive measures to ensure such accidents do not recur.
