Ukhiya, July 3 (V7N)- Two people have died in separate landslides in the Rohingya camps of Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, one of whom was a local resident living inside the camp.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning (July 3) in Rohingya camps 8 and 11 in Ukhiya. It is reported that the deceased from Balukhali Jhumchhari in 8 East was a local resident. Their names and addresses were not immediately available.

The matter has been confirmed by Shamim Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station.

He said, "There have been landslides in Rohingya camps 11 and 8 in Ukhiya. Two people have died in the incident."

Earlier, on Wednesday (June 19), ten people died in separate landslides in the Rohingya camps of Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar. The incidents occurred in Camp-14 (1 person), Camp-10 (4 people), Camp-09 (3 people), Camp-08 (1 person), and Camp-1W (1 person), where two of the deceased were Bangladeshi.

For the past week, there has been continuous heavy rainfall in Cox's Bazar, putting the Rohingya camps at risk of landslides. Some hilly areas of Cox's Bazar, in addition to the Rohingya camps, are also reported to be at risk.

Approximately 1.2 million Rohingya, most of whom fled the brutality of Myanmar's junta in 2017, live in 33 camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Many of them reside in hilly areas prone to landslides.
