Growing amounts of maize have been planted in recent years due to its great economic return

The district has seen a progressive increase in maize farming as a result of its high economic return in recent years.

This year, farmers have planted more corn than they had anticipated, covering a large area of land.

According to sources from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office, farmers have planted maize on 20,268 hectares of land this year—2,268 hectares greater than the goal area for cultivation last year.

According to the DAE sources, farmers anticipate harvesting 2,17,070 tonnes of maize this year.

7,075 hectares in Dewanganj upazila, 3,350 hectares in Bakshiganj, 2,918 hectares in Sarishabari, 2,850 hectares in Madarganj, 2,050 hectares in Islampur, 1,230 hectares in Jamalpur sadar, and 795 hectares in Melandah upazila of the district were reportedly planted with maize by farmers, according to the office.

Zakia Sultana, the deputy director of the DAE, stated that the government has put in place several incentive programs to encourage farmers to grow maize.

She said that 6,300 small and marginal farmers in the district received free maize seed and fertilizer as part of the programs so they could grow maize on a bigha of land.

Notably, last year's increased production of maize and its reasonable price encouraged farmers to plant greater area for cultivation this year.
