Dhaka, Sep 28 (V7N): The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) commemorated its 53rd founding anniversary yesterday with various events to mark the occasion.

According to an ISPR statement, the BAF's journey began on this day in 1971, during the Liberation War, and the day is celebrated as "Bangladesh Air Force Day." The statement highlighted that BAF freedom fighters, alongside citizens from all walks of life, actively participated in the war against Pakistan.

Air Vice Marshal (retd) Abdul Karim Khandkar, Bir Uttam, served as Deputy Chief of Staff during the Liberation War, while Air Vice Marshal (retd) Sultan Mahmud, Bir Uttam, held the position of Officer Commanding of the ‘Kilo Flight.’

The statement further noted that brave members of the BAF played a pivotal role in numerous significant operations, including serving as Sector Commanders. It was during the tumultuous days of the 1971 Liberation War that the need for an independent air force became evident, which ultimately led to the formation of the BAF.

On September 28, 1971, the BAF officially began its journey as "Kilo Flight," equipped with one Otter aircraft, one Dakota aircraft, and one Alouette helicopter. The unit consisted of 57 members, including Bengali pilots, airmen from technical trades, and civil aviators. ‘Kilo Flight’ conducted over fifty successful air raids during the Liberation War, contributing significantly to Bangladesh's victory.

In honor of the anniversary, special prayers and a ceremonial feast ("Pritibhoj") were organized at all air force bases, units, and at BANAIR, the BAF contingent deployed under UN Peacekeeping Missions.
