Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) – Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral Reform Commission, has stressed the need for holding individuals accountable for electoral crimes committed during Bangladesh's last three general elections.

Speaking at a debate event titled "The Role of the EC, Candidates, and Citizens in Ensuring Fair Elections," organized by Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) on Friday, Majumdar pointed to the Election Commission (EC) as a key offender.

“Those involved in electoral crimes during the past three elections must face justice,” Majumdar remarked, emphasizing the EC's significant role in the alleged offences.

He underscored the critical role of government cooperation, adding, “Without government support, even an impartial Election Commission cannot ensure a fair election process.”

Regarding the new Election Commission led by AMM Nasir Uddin, Majumdar said: “The effectiveness of the EC will be judged by its outcomes. However, unlike previous polls, the new commission faces less pressure from the ruling party, which could ease its challenges.”

Majumdar also criticized the media's role in previous elections, stating that some outlets suppressed the truth, either willingly or under coercion, undermining their responsibility to inform the public.

He highlighted voter inclusion issues, particularly for women and expatriates, as areas requiring the EC's attention to ensure fair elections.

“Reforming the electoral system is crucial, but these changes need time to be implemented effectively,” he added.
