Dhaka, Dec 14 (V7N)- Today marks Martyred Intellectuals Day, a day of remembrance for the best sons of Bengal who were brutally killed by the occupying Pakistani forces and their collaborators, including Razakars, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams, just two days before Bangladesh's victory in the Liberation War of 1971. On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani forces led by General Niazi surrendered, leading to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
To honor the memory of the martyred intellectuals, the government, alongside various political, social, and cultural organizations, has organized numerous programs across the country.
At 7:05 am, President Md. Shahabuddin paid tribute by placing a wreath at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial, followed by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at 7:06 am. Both leaders observed a moment of silence as a mark of deep respect for the nation’s brightest minds who made the ultimate sacrifice. A smart contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces saluted during the occasion.
At 7:22 am, led by the Advisor on Liberation War Affairs, family members of the martyred intellectuals, war-wounded freedom fighters, and other surviving veterans paid their respects at the Mirpur Memorial. Later, at 8:30 am, tributes were also paid at the Rayer Bazar Massacre Memorial. From 8:30 am onwards, citizens from all walks of life gathered to lay flowers and pay homage to the intellectuals.
President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus issued separate messages, underscoring the significance of the day and renewing the nation’s pledge to honor the ideals for which the intellectuals sacrificed their lives.
Special programs, including prayers and discussions, were organized nationwide. Mosques, temples, churches, and other places of worship offered prayers for the martyred intellectuals. Daily newspapers published special supplements, and Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels aired special programs highlighting the importance of the day.
Martyred Intellectuals Day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during the Liberation War and inspires the nation to work towards building a prosperous, inclusive, and independent Bangladesh, honoring the ideals of those who gave their lives for freedom.
