Egypt, Dec 18, (V7N) - Malaysian Higher Education Minister Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir reaffirmed Malaysia's continued support for Bangladesh, particularly in addressing the Rohingya humanitarian crisis and Bangladesh's potential inclusion as a sectoral dialogue partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Dr. Zambry made these comments during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the St. Regis Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday.
The meeting covered a broad range of issues of mutual interest to both countries. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation between Malaysia and Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of recruitment of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia, strengthening higher education ties, and finding solutions to the ongoing Rohingya crisis. Another key topic of discussion was the possibility of Bangladesh joining ASEAN as a sectoral dialogue partner, a move which Malaysia fully supports.
Dr. Zambry, who is also a strong advocate for microcredit, expressed his country's commitment to supporting Bangladesh in these areas. In particular, he highlighted Malaysia's ongoing support for addressing the challenges faced by the Rohingya people, many of whom have sought refuge in Bangladesh after fleeing violence in Myanmar.
Professor Yunus, in response, reiterated his proposal for an international conference on the Rohingya crisis, aimed at garnering international attention and support. He emphasized that over 80,000 new Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh in recent months, following a renewed wave of violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state. This violence has further exacerbated the crisis that has plagued the region for years.
The Chief Adviser also proposed the establishment of a UN-supervised safe zone in Rakhine State, which would provide protection and assistance to the displaced Rohingya population. Professor Yunus believes such a zone could be crucial in reducing violence and improving the living conditions of the displaced people.
In addition to the Rohingya issue, the discussions also touched on Bangladesh's upcoming elections. Professor Yunus stated that his government is planning to hold national elections by the first half of 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape.
This meeting highlights the strengthening relationship between Malaysia and Bangladesh, with both nations committed to addressing regional challenges and enhancing cooperation in various sectors. The dialogue between Dr. Zambry and Professor Yunus reflects a shared commitment to peace, stability, and development in the region, particularly concerning the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya people.
