Kolkata, Dec 20 (V7N) — DNA tests have confirmed that the remains recovered from a canal and a flat in Kolkata belong to former Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar, according to the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The results were matched with DNA samples provided by his daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen.

A senior CID official revealed that the samples were sent to India's Central Forensic Laboratory, where the genetic link between Anar and his daughter was confirmed. Doreen had traveled to Kolkata in late November to submit her DNA sample, aiding the investigation.

Anwarul Azim Anar, the former MP of Jhenaidah-4 constituency, was murdered in May this year at a flat in Sanjeeba Gardens, New Town, Kolkata. The gruesome discovery of his body parts shocked both India and Bangladesh.

The investigation led to the arrests of Jihad Hawlader on May 23 and Siam Hossain on June 7. The CID filed a detailed 1,200-page charge sheet in August at the Barasat District Court, North 24 Parganas district. The accused face charges under sections 364 (kidnapping with intent to murder), 302 (culpable homicide), 201 (destruction of evidence), 34 (organised criminal activity), and 14 of the Foreigners Act of the Indian Penal Code.

This development sheds light on the chilling murder of the controversial former MP, raising questions about the motive and further implications of the case. The investigation continues as the CID pursues justice for Anwarul Azim Anar.
