Dhaka, Dec 25 (V7N) — Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Affairs Advisor, announced that legal action will be taken against the investigation officer who attempted to acquit three high-profile individuals in two murder cases related to the student and public mass uprising.
The advisor made this statement during his visit to the Christmas celebrations at St. Mary's Cathedral Church in Kakrail on Wednesday evening.
“The person responsible for this act will undoubtedly face the law,” said Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. “He is currently on leave, but it will not last long. Action will be taken, and such misconduct will not be tolerated.”
The cases in question involved the deaths of Sabuj Mia, who was beaten to death, and Md. Shahjahan Mia, who was shot during the anti-discrimination student movement in the New Market area on July 16. The victims' families subsequently filed murder cases at New Market Police Station.
Inspector Md. Jahangir Arif, of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB), was responsible for investigating the cases. However, it was revealed that he prepared a final report acquitting former Law Minister Anisul Haque, former Prime Minister’s Advisor Salman F Rahman, and former NTMC Director General Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan.
The report was prepared without proper permission from his superiors, and Inspector Arif falsely identified himself as an officer of New Market Police Station in the documents, despite being assigned to the DB. His attempt to submit the report to the court on October 23 was caught before it could proceed.
Inspector Arif has since been temporarily suspended and is reportedly on leave, citing illness. The Home Affairs Advisor confirmed that the incident is under review, and the investigation is being conducted anew.
“There is no rule to submit a charge sheet or investigation report in such a manner,” Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated. “This behavior is unacceptable, and necessary steps will be taken to uphold the integrity of the justice system.”
The two cases have drawn significant attention, as they involve allegations against prominent figures. The killings of Sabuj Mia and Shahjahan Mia during the July-August student uprising highlighted widespread unrest over social and political inequalities.
The government has pledged transparency and accountability in the handling of these cases, and the latest revelations have intensified scrutiny of law enforcement practices.
