Dhaka, Jan 01 (V7N) — Bangladesh aims to strengthen its bilateral relations with India on multiple fronts, irrespective of the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to Foreign Affairs Advisor Towhid Hossain. Speaking to reporters on New Year's Day, Hossain emphasised the government's intent to prioritise mutual interests with India while navigating broader international challenges.
"Beyond the Sheikh Hasina issue, there are numerous areas of shared interest between our countries. We are committed to advancing those," he stated. Discussions on the Ganges Water Sharing Agreement have already begun, signalling a focus on collaborative resource management.
Hossain acknowledged the complexities of balancing relationships with India, the United States, and China in the coming year. He highlighted the importance of fostering stronger ties with China and the US, announcing an upcoming bilateral visit to China later this month.
Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Hossain underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees. "The situation in Rakhine remains highly challenging. We are closely monitoring developments to ensure the protection of rights and security for the Rohingyas before their return," he said.
On the issue of Sheikh Hasina, Hossain confirmed that a formal request for her return has been sent to India, though no response has been received. "The government is committed to bringing Sheikh Hasina back to face justice," he reiterated.
With the start of the new year, Bangladesh is poised to address key regional and global issues, focusing on diplomacy, resource sharing, and resolving long-standing humanitarian crises.
