Nepal, Jan 07 (V7N)—Five Bangladeshi female climbers, currently in Nepal, are safe and in good health.
Concerns arose regarding their well-being following a powerful earthquake in Tibet, China, on Tuesday.
The earthquake in Tibet has resulted in 95 confirmed deaths, according to state-run media in China.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9:05am local time in Beijing on Tuesday.
According to China’s Earthquake Network Center, the earthquake originated at a depth of 10km below the surface in the remote city of Sogo in Dingri County, known as the northern entry point to the Himalayas.
Many houses in the surrounding areas have been reported as destroyed.
However, the members of the climbing team have confirmed that they are safe and well.
After the earthquake on Tuesday morning, team member Yasmin Lisa shared a picture of the golden morning light over the mountains and wrote: "Good morning. All five climbers in the Himalayas are safe and well."
The five women are on a special winter mountaineering expedition in Nepal.
They are scheduled to summit three peaks in the Langtang Himal range.
The team departed for Kathmandu on December 21 last year and their expedition is named "Sultana's Dream Unbound."
The Bangladeshi climbers are tackling the challenge of summiting three famous peaks in Nepal’s Langtang Himal: Naya Kanga Peak, Baden Powell Peak, and Yala Peak.
The expedition is inspired by the famous novel "Sultana’s Dream" by Bangladeshi writer Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, which is listed in UNESCO's "World Memory" registry. The climbers' organization, "Avijatri," has organized this special expedition.
Nishta Mojumdar, the first Bangladeshi woman to summit Everest, is leading the team with the slogan "Sultana's Dream Unbound."
The other members of the team are climbers Yasmin Lisa, AP Talukdar, Arpita Debnath and Tahura Sultana.
The expedition is supported by Mastercard in collaboration with the Liberation War Museum.
