Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N)- On the occasion of National Martyrs’ Day, Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, paid tribute to the martyrs of the Peelkhana massacre by laying a wreath at the Banani Military Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.

He placed the wreath at around 1:45 pm, honoring those killed in the tragic incident. Earlier in the morning, Mohammad Shahabuddin and Tarique Rahman also paid their respects by laying wreaths at the martyrs’ graves.

Speaking after the tribute, Shafiqur Rahman said that the full investigation report into the killings of 57 army officers has yet to be made public. Although two reports were prepared, he said, they have not been fully disclosed. He added that the real truth would emerge once the complete report is published.

Alleging involvement of the then ruling party in the incident, the Jamaat chief said the nation would be relieved of its burden once the real perpetrators are identified and justice is ensured, emphasizing that he seeks justice, not revenge.

The Peelkhana tragedy occurred on February 25, 2009, when 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed at the then BDR headquarters. Since 2024, the day has been officially observed as National Martyrs’ Day.
