March 2 (V7N) – Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has said Bangladesh’s top priority during the ongoing Middle East crisis is to ensure the safety, security and interests of its citizens living in the region under all circumstances.
Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Ministry after chairing an inter-ministerial meeting in Dhaka, the minister stated that the government’s position is clear and firmly focused on protecting Bangladeshi nationals residing and working in Middle Eastern countries.
He said the welfare of expatriate Bangladeshis has remained at the forefront of government considerations since the beginning of the crisis, adding that the country will stand by its citizens wherever they are if they are affected by the conflict.
Khalilur Rahman also revealed that he received telephone calls from the foreign ministers of Kuwait and Bahrain and the state minister for foreign affairs of Qatar regarding the evolving situation, with discussions centring on the safety and security of Bangladeshi nationals in those countries. According to him, the respective governments have assured Bangladesh about the safety of its citizens.
The foreign minister expressed hope that no Bangladeshi would fall victim to the conflict, but assured that the government is prepared to take all necessary measures if any untoward situation arises. He reiterated that Bangladesh does not believe war or conflict can bring lasting solutions and voiced hope for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
Referring to prospective migrant workers temporarily stranded due to the situation, he said discussions have already been held and arrangements will be made to facilitate their travel once air communication returns to normal.
