Dhaka, Feb 11 (V7N) – Ireland’s Ambassador to Dhaka, Kevin Kelly, has affirmed Ireland's full support for Bangladesh’s interim government, its efforts toward the restoration of democracy, and ongoing reform programs. Ambassador Kelly, who is based in New Delhi, conveyed this commitment during a meeting with Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus in Tejgaon on Monday.
Ambassador Kelly expressed Ireland's interest in sending a team to assist Bangladesh's democratic transition, highlighting the European nation's commitment to supporting political stability and democratic reforms in Bangladesh. He also emphasized Ireland’s eagerness to strengthen trade relations with Dhaka, noting that major Irish brands are interested in importing more products from Bangladesh.
The 30-minute meeting covered a wide range of topics, including the recent regional political situation, the Good Friday Agreement—which ended decades of conflict in Northern Ireland—and the Rohingya crisis. Ambassador Kelly assured that Ireland will continue to support the more than one million Rohingya refugees who have sought shelter in Bangladesh, reinforcing Ireland’s commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region.
The meeting marks a positive step toward deepening bilateral ties between Ireland and Bangladesh, with both countries focusing on democratic development, economic cooperation, and addressing regional humanitarian challenges.
