Dhaka, Feb 27 (V7N) – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi has emphasized that Myanmar must take responsibility and find a solution to the Rohingya crisis.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Advisor at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday (February 27) morning, Grandi acknowledged Myanmar's current internal conflicts but insisted that international pressure is necessary to ensure a resolution.
Myanmar's Proposed Conference & UNHCR's Role
Grandi revealed that the Myanmar government has proposed a conference in the coming months, where UNHCR has pledged its cooperation. He also expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for its continued support and sheltering of the Rohingya.
However, when asked about discussions on the Joint Response Plan (JRP), Grandi did not provide a direct answer.
Meetings & Camp Visit
During his three-day visit, the UNHCR chief is scheduled to meet:
- Chief Advisor of Bangladesh
- High Representative for Rohingya Affairs, Khalilur Rahman
- Other top-level officials
Additionally, he will visit the Rohingya camps to assess the humanitarian situation firsthand.
Challenges in Funding for Rohingya Relief
This visit comes at a crucial time as Bangladesh prepares for this year’s Joint Response Project (JRP). The annual fundraising appeal for Rohingya humanitarian assistance is set to be launched in March in Geneva, but funding uncertainties loom due to global shifts and US aid reductions.
Grandi’s visit is expected to reignite international discussions on the Rohingya crisis and highlight the pressing need for sustainable solutions.
