Dhaka, Mar 09 (V7N)-Students of Jagannath University(JnU) held a torchlight procession on Sunday evening to protest a rise in rapes across the country and demand swift justice for rapists.
The program started at 7pm from the campus, before passing through the Tantibazar area of Puran Dhaka and returning to the campus.
During the procession, pedestrians also joined the protest.
The participants chanted various slogans demanding punishment for rapists.
JnU student Kazi Tamanna said: "Women are not safe anywhere today. Not at home, not outside. There is no peace. Everywhere is ruled by human-like beasts.
"On social media, all we see is rape. If public execution for rapists is introduced, this virus will decrease. Rape has now become an infectious disease."
Another student, Ivan Tahsib, said: "We are here to protest the social disrespect faced by women. This is our protest against the ongoing rapes across the country. If rapists are punished, no one will dare to commit such crimes again. We demand a social boycott of rapists."
Tania, a third-year student from the Bangla department, said: "No matter what society says, if the reason for rape is women's attire, why is the rape of an eight-year-old girl wearing a burqa accepted? I ask society for an answer. The cause of rape is not the clothes but the twisted mentality of some men."
She further demanded: "We want justice for rape within three days. Why 180 days when the rapist has confessed?"
Various active student organizations and cultural workers of the university participated in the protest.
