Dhaka, May 20 (V7N) — Starlink, the satellite-based high-speed internet service, has officially launched in Bangladesh, offering a new, premium alternative for internet users across the country. The launch was confirmed via Starlink’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, and further announced at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Tuesday noon.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, formally unveiled the service, highlighting its potential to transform internet connectivity for premium customers and businesses.
Starlink is initially offering two packages for Bangladeshi customers: Starlink Residence priced at BDT 6,000 per month and Residence Light at BDT 4,200 per month. A one-time setup fee of BDT 47,000 will be charged for the necessary equipment. Faiz Ahmed emphasized that the service offers unlimited data usage with no speed caps, delivering speeds of up to 300 Mbps.
Customers in Bangladesh can start placing orders from Tuesday, with expectations to establish a robust service within 90 days of launch.
Despite the relatively high cost, the service is seen as a sustainable solution for customers seeking uninterrupted, high-quality internet. It is expected to benefit not only individual users but also businesses in regions where fiber optics or other high-speed internet infrastructure are unavailable. NGOs, freelancers, and entrepreneurs stand to gain from reliable, year-round connectivity.
At the press conference, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab also clarified that the government will impose a VAT of one US dollar on each device and connection. Importantly, he assured that the nation’s sovereignty will remain intact, with the government monitoring Starlink operations through two distinct mechanisms.
The arrival of Starlink marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s digital infrastructure, potentially bridging connectivity gaps and empowering users with faster, more reliable internet service.
