A major environmental initiative took place on Thursday at the Gulshan-Banani Lake, specifically along the Banani Lake Side from road-18 to Kamal Ataturk Avenue, where the largest plastic recycling drive in the area was successfully conducted between 1pm and 5pm.
Organized by Unicef, the program received strong local support from Banani Society and the community group 55 Kodomtola.
The event aimed to raise awareness about plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices among city residents.
Key figures from the Banani Society were present at the event, including Shawkat Ali Bhuiyan (Dilan), president, Shafiquzzaman Ratan, treasurer, Anjam Maruf, executive member and Dr Shahed Haider Chowdhury, member, Banani Society.
Volunteers, environmentalists, and residents of the neighborhood actively participated in the cleanup and recycling effort, collecting and sorting large quantities of plastic waste from the lake and surrounding areas.
Organizers and participants expressed hope that this initiative would inspire similar community-driven environmental efforts across Dhaka and beyond.
