Dhaka, Sep 14 (V7N) – Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has warned that the government will not tolerate the ongoing blockade in protest of excluding Algi and Hamerdi unions of Bhanga upazila from the Faridpur-4 constituency. He said legal action would be taken if the protesters do not lift the blockade by Sunday afternoon.
The advisor made the remarks after a meeting of the core committee on law and order held at the Secretariat around 12 noon on Sunday.
Addressing broader issues, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury revealed that the government is considering reducing the sentences of long-term prisoners. Priority would be given to the elderly, while in the case of women prisoners, those who have served 20 years may be released. However, he noted that the term for male prisoners has not yet been finalized.
Speaking on upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, he said:
“There are problems within the committees in many places regarding the puja. But let it be. This time the puja will be performed well.”
On the law and order situation, he pointed out that the recent DUCSU and JACSU elections were conducted smoothly without controversy. He further added that preparations for the upcoming national elections are underway, including recruitment and training activities.
