Dhaka, Sep 16 (V7N) – The long-awaited Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has begun trial operations on the Padma Bridge, introducing a cashless and non-stop toll collection method. The pilot phase officially started on Monday (Sept 15).
Under the new system, vehicles will no longer need to stop at toll plazas. Registered vehicles using the designated ETC lane will be able to cross the bridge at speeds of up to 30 km/h, with tolls automatically deducted from the user’s prepaid account.
To access the service, vehicle owners must first register and recharge through the ‘D-Toll’ option of Trust Bank Limited’s Tap app. After verification at the RFID booth of the Padma Bridge, the system will recognize the vehicle automatically in the future.
Abu Said, Side Engineer of the Padma Bridge, said the new system will allow vehicles to cross seamlessly once the setup process is complete. While the service is currently limited to the Tap app, more financial apps will be integrated soon. The trial will continue for 10 to 15 days, after which full implementation will depend on approval from higher authorities.
Authorities and commuters expect the automated toll system to significantly reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas and save time for thousands of passengers daily. The launch comes three and a half years after the inauguration of the Padma Bridge on June 25, 2022.
