Dhaka, Mar 19 (V7N) — The rice market in Polava unstable ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, with both packaged and loose basmati rice seeing significant price increases. Loose basmati rice, previously selling at 15 taka per kg, is now priced at 30 taka per kg in local markets.
Currently, good quality basmati rice is being sold at 150 to 155 taka per kg. Meanwhile, Chinigura rice has risen to 150 taka per kg, an increase of 30 taka per kg. Packaged rice prices have also climbed, with a kilogram previously sold at 160 taka now going for 175 taka.
Traders attribute the price rise to halted imports and decreased local production. However, buyers have criticized weak market surveillance, alleging that some unscrupulous traders are taking advantage of the increased demand to hike prices.
Similar trends are being observed in the capital and in Kushtia, where basmati rice prices have risen from 120 taka per kg before Ramadan to 140–145 taka per kg.
Market analysts warn that unless supply and monitoring improve, rice prices may continue to climb, putting additional pressure on households preparing for Eid celebrations.
