Dhaka, Oct 15 (V7N) — Teachers affiliated with the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system staged a protest at Shahbagh intersection on Wednesday, demanding a 20% increase in house rent and medical allowance.
Around 2 pm, teachers and employees set out from the Central Shaheed Minar in a large procession heading towards Shahbagh. They faced obstacles from the police en route, leading to a scuffle before they occupied Shahbagh intersection. The protest temporarily halted traffic in the area.
This marks the fourth consecutive day of the teachers’ ongoing demonstration. Over 100 teachers had been observing a sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar since the morning, urging the government to issue a notification regarding their demands.
When the group attempted to march towards the Secretariat, the police stopped them at the High Court’s Mazargate, preventing further movement.
Teachers have stated that their protest will continue until the government responds to their demands.
