Dhaka, Nov 21 (V7N) - Bangladesh’s interim government is considering seeking assistance from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to bring back fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who are currently in India after being convicted of crimes against humanity.

The announcement came during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, where Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul said the government is preparing to hold a meeting to examine the legal grounds for approaching the ICC under the Rome Statute.

At an earlier meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon, the Advisory Council reviewed decisions related to the extradition process. Dr. Nazrul confirmed that a formal letter will be sent to India requesting the return of the two convicts, citing obligations under existing extradition frameworks.

He said India holds “additional responsibility” to ensure justice, as both individuals have been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1).

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was also present at the briefing.
