Dhaka, Dec 13 (V7N)- The person who shot Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi has been identified, and police are working to arrest him soon, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali.
He made the statement on Saturday morning after attending the annual general meeting of the Retired Police Officers Welfare Association at Rajarbagh in the capital. The DMP commissioner said the investigation into the shooting incident is ongoing, and details cannot be disclosed at this stage. He also mentioned that security measures are being strengthened for candidates ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a separate press release, the DMP said that the identity of anyone providing information leading to the arrest of the accused will be kept confidential, and an appropriate reward will be given.
Meanwhile, Sharif Osman Hadi, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, remains in critical condition. He is currently under close observation at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The shooting occurred on Friday afternoon on Box Culvert Road in Bijoynagar. After the attack, Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
According to eyewitnesses and CCTV footage, Hadi was traveling in a battery-powered rickshaw with two others when assailants on a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene.
The motive behind the shooting has not yet been confirmed. However, sources said the person seen firing in the CCTV footage had reportedly been campaigning alongside Hadi since the morning of the incident.
Police said efforts are underway to determine the motive and bring those responsible to justice.
