Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud has confirmed that an investigation is underway into the tragic incident where a Bangladeshi youth was fatally shot by police at his residence in New York’s Queens area.

Dr. Mahmud made this announcement while addressing questions from journalists after a meeting on Saturday.

Expressing deep regret over the incident, the minister stated, “We have conveyed our condolences for this unfortunate incident, and an investigation is currently ongoing. If it is determined that the police acted excessively or made an error, we trust that appropriate measures will be taken by the authorities.”

He further added, “The Consul General of Bangladesh in New York visited the residence of the deceased Bangladeshi youth, Winn Rosario, and had discussions with his family. According to the family, it seemed unnecessary for the police to resort to gunfire.”

Regarding the ongoing efforts to rescue the sailors aboard the hostage ship MV Abdullah, Dr. Mahmud stated, “Efforts are being made to safely rescue the sailors from the grip of Somali pirates and to release the MV Abdullah ship. We anticipate a resolution through dialogue very soon. All Bangladeshi sailors are currently in their cabins and are in good condition. There are no issues concerning food and supplies.”

Responding to inquiries about the repatriation of Myanmar military personnel seeking refuge in Bangladesh, the minister explained, “Three Myanmar military members, holding the ranks of major, captain, and sergeant, have recently entered Bangladesh. They are currently under the custody of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). These individuals, along with other Myanmar military members who have previously entered Bangladesh, will be repatriated via sea route in the near future.”

The tragic incident involving the 19-year-old Bangladeshi-origin youth, Winn Rosario, occurred on Wednesday at around 1:30 PM local time on 101 Avenue in Wozniak Park, New York.

According to reports from The New York Times, the young man was reportedly experiencing mental health issues and had called 911 for assistance before the fatal shooting.
