Environmentalists and residents in Chittagong have expressed deep concern over the recent decision by the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) to cut down 46 century-old trees and hill slopes stretching from Tiger Pass to the CRB area. This move is intended to facilitate the construction of a ramp for the elevated expressway.
In a reminiscent scenario from 2022, where a government plan to build a private hospital in the CRB area was halted due to vigorous opposition from residents and green activists, the current decision has sparked renewed outrage among the local population and environmental advocates.
The CRB area, named after the Central Railway Building constructed by the British colonial administration in 1872, stands as a picturesque, hilly enclave in the Port City, renowned for its Shireesh trees (Albizia Lebeck). Nestled amidst centuries-old trees, hills, and valleys, this region harbors a diverse array of bird and animal species.
Traditionally, Chattogram residents gather at the CRB area's open stage, known as "Shireeshtala," to celebrate the Bengali New Year on April 14 each year. Additionally, the CRB hosts the renowned "Boli Khela," an annual freehand wrestling competition that attracts participants from various regions.
Expressing grave concerns, environmentalists and members of civil society warn that the proposed felling of trees and destruction of hills could precipitate an environmental catastrophe. Reports indicate that the CDA has sought permission from the Forest Department and Bangladesh Railway to proceed with the tree felling, with marked trees slated for removal.
