As Ramadan unfolded across Bangladesh, a government initiative aimed at ensuring food security brought relief to over 591,000 individuals, offering subsidized meat, milk, and eggs at fair prices. Launched in the capital and expanded to encompass 35 districts, the program witnessed widespread participation, providing essential food items to citizens during the holy month.
Operated by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, in collaboration with partner organizations such as the Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association and the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council, the program aimed to alleviate the financial burden on households and ensure access to nutritious food items.
According to official data, the program facilitated the sale of approximately 199,168 kilograms of beef, 5,131 kilograms of mutton, 216,427 kilograms of dressed broiler meat, 238,661 liters of liquid cow milk, and 4,209,300 pieces of eggs, generating over Taka 22.33 crore in revenue for the government.
The program, which ran from March 10 to April 8, offered essential food items at subsidized rates, with prices fixed at Taka 80 per liter for milk, Taka 600 for beef, Taka 900 for mutton, Taka 250 for dressed broiler meat, and Taka 100 for a dozen eggs.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister M Abdur Rahman inaugurated the initiative, underscoring the government's commitment to ensuring food security and alleviating the economic strain on citizens during Ramadan. As the program concluded, it left a significant impact on thousands of households, providing vital support during the holy month.
