Dhaka, July 05 (V7N) — Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that an investigation into the past 15 years of journalism in Bangladesh will be conducted under the supervision of the United Nations. He made the statement during a review and exchange meeting at the Broadcast Journalists Center (BJC) on Saturday morning (July 5).
Shafiqul Alam said that during the previous government, journalists in Bangladesh were tightly controlled by the authorities. However, the interim government is committed to protecting independent journalism and freeing the media from such constraints.
“The government has taken measures to ensure that no agency can intimidate the media. Currently, the media is independent, and the government is not interfering in any way,” he added. Shafiqul Alam also emphasized that the minimum salary of journalists should be set at 30,000 taka.
During the meeting, the journalists’ organization demanded the formation of a separate commission dedicated to broadcast media, establishment of minimum educational qualifications for journalists, and a distinct salary structure for media personnel. The organization also raised concerns over the lack of progress despite the Media Reform Commission’s report being published four months ago.
