The Cabinet Division has issued directives to all ministries to discontinue the use of single-use plastic as part of efforts to combat plastic pollution and achieve a single-use plastic-free environment in the Secretariat by next June.

According to a recent letter signed by Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain, ministries are instructed to refrain from laminating invitations, visiting cards, and file folders. Instead, glass bottles or reusable bottles made from eco-friendly materials should be utilized in meeting rooms, while plastic bags and single-use plastic utensils are prohibited.

Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has also communicated this initiative to all ministers through a semi-official letter.

Following the cabinet secretary's directive, several ministries have already taken steps to halt the use of single-use plastic, including discontinuing plastic cups, plates, knives, and spoons. However, some ministries still use plastic water bottles, wrappers, and folders.

Officials acknowledge the challenge of reducing plastic usage but stress the importance of implementing sustainable practices. Despite the difficulties, ministries are making efforts to comply with the directive, with plans to convene a meeting after Eid-ul-Fitr to ensure effective implementation.

The government has prioritized environmental protection, with the Environment Ministry launching a 100-day program to address environmental issues, including reducing single-use plastic consumption. Additionally, a 10-year action plan is in place to manage plastic waste, aiming to achieve significant reductions in plastic usage and increase recycling rates by 2025 and beyond.
