Tomorrow is the 62nd anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq's death, and it will be marked appropriately throughout the nation.
 
On April 27, 1962, in Dhaka, AK Fazlul Huq, sometimes referred to as Sher-e-Bangla (Tiger of Bengal) or Huq Saheb, passed away.
 
On October 26, 1873, he was born at the home of his maternal uncle in Saturia, an affluent village in the southern region of the Barishal Division's then-Bakerganj, now-Jhalakathi, district. However, the hamlet of Chakhar, which is 14 miles from Barisal town, was home to his family home.
 
Renowned public figure Huq served in a number of important political roles, including mayor of Kolkata (1935), chief minister of East Bengal (1954) and undivided Bengal (1937–1943), Pakistan's home minister (1955), and governor of East Pakistan (1956–58).
 
Numerous socio-political and cultural organisations have organised elaborate events to commemorate the day, such as a milad mahfil, talks, and the laying of wreaths and giving of fateha at the tomb of the fallen leader.
 
Tomorrow at 8:00 am, the ruling Awami League will honour the great leader by laying flowers at his tomb at Suhrawardi Udayan. In addition, the gathering will recite Surah Fatiha and offer prayers at Sher-e-Bangla's grave for the soul of the deceased to be saved.
 
In the meantime, Barishal Bibhag Samiti is going to arrange a doa mahfil and debate to commemorate Sher-e Bangla AK Fazlul Huq's death anniversary.
 
On Saturday (April-27) at 4 p.m., the doa mahfil and debate will take place in the Kitchen Yard Party Center's VIP area in Motijheel. President of Barishal Bibhag Samiti Valiant Freedom Fighter M Ziaul Kabir Dulu will preside over the event, while Bangladesh Press Council Chairman Justice M Nizamul Huq Nasim will be the chief guest.
