Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Saturday stated he is unsure if former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has left the country.
“I have heard that he left the country, but I still don't know for sure whether he is here or has left. I need to obtain information before making any statements,” he said in response to journalist inquiries after a program at Dhaka University's TSC.
On Friday, media reports indicated that Benazir Ahmed had left the country amid allegations of corruption. When asked about these allegations, the minister said, "If someone does wrong, they will be punished according to the laws of Bangladesh. The investigation is ongoing.”
Regarding whether such actions tarnish the police force's image, he said, “No, it is a personal matter. Our police force works hard and takes on any challenge, including counter-terrorism and COVID-19. Institutions do not take responsibility for individual crimes.”
Addressing the murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar, the minister said the main investigation will be conducted by India, where the incident occurred, but Bangladesh will cooperate if involved.
