Bangladesh is seeking cooperation from India to synchronize the ban periods on Ilish fishing to better protect the fish during its breeding season. Currently, Indian fishermen benefit from the earlier lifting of the ban in India, while Bangladeshi fishers must wait an additional month.
Bangladesh's Department of Fisheries has reached out to Indian authorities for coordination to improve Ilish catch rates in both countries' waters. Fisheries officials noted that the mismatch in ban periods has hindered the expected benefits of the fishing bans in Bangladesh.
