Dhaka, July 17(V7N) — Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged protesters demanding reforms in the government job quota system to remain patient, assuring them that justice will be served by the High Court. Addressing the nation on Wednesday evening, she emphasized the need for calm and reiterated the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of the student community.
Violence has escalated over the past three days in various educational institutions and areas across Bangladesh, resulting in six deaths on Tuesday. Prime Minister Hasina's address comes amid these tumultuous circumstances, aiming to bring stability and hope.
“I specially request everyone to wait patiently until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict. I believe our student society will get justice from the High Court, and they will not be disappointed,” she said.
Government's Efforts and Past Actions
Reflecting on the government's previous actions, Hasina highlighted the 2018 decision to cancel the quota system in government jobs, a move later overturned by the High Court in favor of maintaining quotas for freedom fighters. The government has since appealed this decision, with a hearing scheduled in the Supreme Court.
Despite these efforts, recent protests have intensified. Hasina noted that the government has shown considerable patience and cooperation, even providing security for the protesters. However, she expressed concern over the involvement of self-interested groups who have incited violence to further their own ambitions.
Call for Peace and Condemnation of Violence
The Prime Minister condemned the violence and expressed deep sorrow for the lives lost. “I wish for the forgiveness of the souls of those who died. My deepest condolences to the family members. I condemn every killing. All the events that happened were never wanted,” she stated.
She described the brutal incidents, including attacks on students, destruction of property, and assaults on teachers and provosts. Emphasizing that such actions will not go unpunished, she assured that those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice.
Judicial Investigation and Support for Victims' Families
Prime Minister Hasina announced a judicial investigation into the incidents to ensure a fair trial and justice. She also pledged necessary support for the families of the victims, reaffirming the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens' rights.
“I declare unequivocally that action will be taken to ensure that those who have committed murder, looting, and terrorist activities, whoever they are, will be given appropriate punishment,” she asserted.
Assurance of Security and Legal Resolution
Expressing concern for the safety of the protesting students, Hasina appealed to parents, guardians, and teachers to remain vigilant. She reassured that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is committed to ensuring the safety of all students.
Highlighting the opportunity for a legal resolution, she urged protesters to avoid giving criminals a chance to incite further conflict. “I believe our student society will get justice from the High Court, they will not be disappointed,” she reiterated.
Concluding her address, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed hope for a peaceful and prosperous future for Bangladesh, developed in the spirit of the liberation war. She extended her deepest condolences to the families of those affected by the violence and reaffirmed her commitment to justice and development.
