In a stunning development, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has tendered her resignation and fled the country. Accompanying her, her sister Sheikh Rehana and other family members have also departed.

According to the BBC, a helicopter carrying the former Prime Minister departed for India.

AFP, citing a trusted associate of Sheikh Hasina, revealed that both sisters left the government residence for a secure location. “She had planned to make a statement before leaving, but circumstances prevented her,” the source informed AFP.

Reuters reports that Sheikh Hasina and her family traveled to India via a military helicopter. The dramatic exit occurred on Monday afternoon from Banga Bhaban, the official residence and primary workplace of the President of Bangladesh.

Sources indicate that their destination is West Bengal in India. Prior to her departure, Sheikh Hasina had intended to record a speech, but unfortunately, she was unable to do so.
