Md Abdullahhel Baki, the new president of the Bangladesh Police Association, has said that the policemen will quickly address the ongoing turmoil inside their force and resume station and police activities to serve the public.
He said: "The police are a service organization dedicated to the public 24 hours a day. The police can never go on strike."
Abdullahel Baki made this statement during a press conference at the Bangladesh Police Association office in Paltan on Wednesday afternoon.
He said: "The police are friends of the people. However, under Hasina's government, the police force was turned into a club-wielding force due to political vendetta. The police were used to oppress and commit injustices against people. Such times will not return."
He added: "During Hasina's government, many senior police officers acted as agents for the Awami League. As a result, senior officers at the stations were forced to carry out unethical orders. Those same officers announced the strike yesterday. But the police can never go on strike. This is the first time in the history of the police. We are dissolving the previous committee of the Bangladesh Police Association and announcing a new committee. We will quickly start our operations and work for the public."
In a written statement, the organization's president, Police Inspector Abdullahhel Baki, said: "The Bangladesh Police Association is a very ancient organization. This organization plays a very important role in the overall welfare of police members."
Mentioning that the lives of innocent, oppressed ordinary police members are in danger, he said: "In this critical time, we, the members of the Bangladesh Police Association, observing the situation closely and driven by conscience, gathered at the association office on August 6 for an emergency meeting. Despite many efforts, we could not find any trace of the current executive committee members. Even attempts to contact them via mobile were unsuccessful. Therefore, it is easily assumed that they have gone into hiding to avoid public wrath as accomplices of the fallen autocracy. Hence, to convey the correct message to the subordinate police members in this difficult time, all present members unanimously decided to dissolve the previous executive committee and form a new 39-member executive committee."
The newly formed executive committee, with Police Inspector Md Abdullahhel Baki as the president and Police Inspector Md Daud Hossain as the general secretary, will lead the Bangladesh Police Association's activities.
The members of the association have also observed with deep concern that an unsigned notice was posted on various social media by the dissolved committee, which has already been broadcasted in electronic and print media.
That notice announced an indefinite strike across the country from August 6 for all police members.
The newly formed executive committee believes that such a strike call is part of a deep conspiracy against the country.
“We declare such irresponsible acts as completely illegal and baseless. We urge all subordinate police members to perform their duties in line with public expectations to ensure the joy of this new victory is not overshadowed,” Abdullahel Baki said.
Appealing to all levels of the public for full cooperation to protect the innocent, oppressed ordinary police members, the police officer said: "We hope that, inspired by the spirit of the anti-discrimination student and public uprising, the new people-friendly police leadership will start a new journey reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the masses. We also declare that we are committed to taking legal action against the responsible police members who have been discredited by the public."
