Former military officer Ziaul Ahsan has been detained in connection with a case registered at New Market police station.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued a brief statement on Friday confirming Ziaul's arrest, which took place late Thursday night in the Khilkhet area based on covert intelligence.

On August 6, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate announced that Major General Ziaul Ahsan, the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), had been relieved of his duties.

Ziaul Ahsan, who joined the Bangladesh Army in 1991, is a trained commando and paratrooper. His service record includes an extended period with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), beginning as a deputy commander on March 5, 2009. Later that year, on August 27, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and assigned as director of RAB’s intelligence wing. He held the position of additional director general of RAB from December 7, 2013, until his departure.

Following his tenure with RAB, Ziaul was transferred to the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) as deputy director general. He later served as a director at the National Security Intelligence (NSI) beginning April 28, 2016.

In 2017, he assumed the role of director at the NTMC. On September 5, 2022, the Ministry of Public Administration issued an order appointing Major General Ziaul Ahsan as the Director General of the NTMC.
