Aminur Rahman Tutul (23) and Zubair Hasan Jihad (22), students from Sirajganj, have tragically lost their eyesight due to police firing during an anti-discrimination student movement. Aminur, a Chemistry student at Sirajganj Government College, and Zubair, an HSC candidate from Govt Haji Korop Ali Memorial College, participated in the protest on July 16 at Sirajganj Islamia College grounds. The situation intensified, leading the police to use tear gas and rubber bullets. Tutul was struck by 32 rubber bullets, with one severely injuring his left eye. Similarly, Jihad was hit in the left eye by a rubber bullet near the railway gate area in the city.

Tutul received initial treatment at a private clinic and later at the Dhaka National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital. His condition now requires further surgery, potentially in India, but his family faces a severe financial crisis. Tutul’s father, a duck farmer, has already spent around 50,000 taka on initial treatments, primarily through loans. The family is seeking both government and public support to fund his necessary eye surgery and restore his vision.

Jihad was also transferred to Dhaka for medical care, where doctors have recommended three additional surgeries. His prospects for regaining vision remain uncertain. His mother, who has been raising him alone after his father's death when Jihad was just five months old, is struggling to afford the estimated 2 to 3 lakhs taka needed for his surgeries. They are appealing for government assistance to cover these costs and help secure a better future for Jihad.

Classmates and local coordinators of the student movement have rallied to support Tutul and Jihad, calling for financial assistance and urging the government to provide jobs or other forms of aid to the injured students. The community's solidarity is strong, but the urgent need for broader support remains critical.

Both families are reaching out to the government, philanthropists, and the public to secure the medical treatments required to potentially restore Tutul and Jihad’s eyesight and help them move forward with their lives.
