The Minority Rights Movement (Songkhaloghu Odhikar Andolon) has demanded the formation of a minority commission to investigate recent attacks on the homes and places of worship of the Hindu community across the country.

A six-member delegation met with the chief adviser of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, on Sunday to present their demands, which include justice for attacks on minority properties and ensuring the protection of their community.

In response to their demands, Dr Yunus assured them that his government is committed to protecting the human rights of all citizens, including members of religious minorities.

He mentioned that several measures have already been taken to protect minorities from any attacks and violence, adding that the police have restored law and order, and the situation is gradually returning to normal across the country.

The meeting was attended by Nahid Islam, adviser for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, as well as Asif Mahmud, adviser for the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

These two advisers, who previously led the successful student movement that toppled the 15-year authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, also reassured the student-led Minority Rights Movement that they would make every effort to fulfil all the demands.
