Dhaka, August 26 – Pedal-driven rickshaw pullers have blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, demanding a seven-point agenda that includes the banning of battery-powered rickshaws, which they claim are "discriminatory." The protest, which began around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, has caused significant traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas.

The demonstration, organized by the Greater Dhaka City Corporation Rickshaw Owners Union, aims to draw attention to the perceived unfair advantages that battery-powered rickshaws have over traditional pedal-driven ones. The rickshaw pullers argue that battery-powered rickshaws are not only taking away their livelihood but also pose safety and regulatory concerns.

As a result of the protest, traffic at the Shahbagh intersection has come to a standstill, with vehicles unable to move in any direction. The blockade has caused significant inconvenience to commuters, prompting concerns over potential escalations and disruptions if their demands are not addressed promptly.

Authorities have not yet made any formal statements regarding the protest or how they plan to resolve the situation.
