Dhaka, Sep 16 (V7N) – Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, head of the commission formed to reform the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has emphasized that the ACC can only be made effective if it is freed from political and bureaucratic pressures. In an exclusive interview with Ekatar Television, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, who also serves as the executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), discussed the need for comprehensive reforms within the ACC.

Following the recent change in government, the interim administration established six commissions aimed at reforming key state institutions, including the ACC. According to Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, while the speed of the ACC's work has increased, it is still insufficient to meet the country's anti-corruption needs.

"The ACC is proving its own incompetence," he remarked during the interview, pointing out that systemic changes are necessary for the commission to be truly effective. He further highlighted that legal and policy reforms are important, but political and bureaucratic restructuring is even more crucial.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman also mentioned that, before any formal ACC reform proposals are presented, discussions will be held with students and other relevant stakeholders involved in the popular uprising.

On the subject of national elections, he stressed that they should only take place after essential state reforms are implemented. He urged the public to give the interim government time to carry out these necessary changes. Moreover, he indicated that the various commissions tasked with reforming different sectors could collaborate to ensure more thorough and effective reforms.

The ACC reform commission, under Dr. Iftekharuzzaman’s leadership, is expected to present its proposals soon, aimed at bolstering the institution’s ability to combat corruption more effectively.
