Mongla, Jan 02, (V7N) - Mongla Port has experienced a significant increase in revenue, with nearly 17 crore taka more earned compared to the previous fiscal year. This growth has been driven by a higher number of incoming ships, increased container and cargo handling, and a rise in the import of reconditioned vehicles, among other factors. Additionally, several mega-projects surrounding the port are creating more employment opportunities.
According to Mongla Port Authority, 846 ships arrived in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to 827 ships in 2022-23. The import of reconditioned vehicles also saw a rise, with 15,340 vehicles being imported in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to 13,576 vehicles in the previous year. Over the last 10 years, Mongla Port has handled a total of 149,153 reconditioned vehicles.
In terms of cargo, Mongla Port handled 10.868 million metric tons in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to 9.905 million metric tons in 2022-23. The port also handled 31,044 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) of containers in 2023-24, an increase from 26,583 TEUs in the previous year.
Revenue from imports and exports reached 319 crore taka in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to 302 crore taka in the 2022-23 fiscal year, marking a 28.55% increase in revenue.
Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman, Chairman of the Mongla Port Authority, mentioned that the number of incoming ships surpassed the target in the 2023-24 fiscal year. He also highlighted that all indicators for the port are on an upward trajectory. Several mega-projects under the "LC" project are currently underway to enhance the port's capacity, and some projects have already been completed. He emphasized that the port's growing capacity will enable it to contribute even more to the national economy in the future. Furthermore, new industries and factories are being established around the port, creating additional employment opportunities.
Mongla Port's Deputy Director, Mohammad Makruzzaman, stated that with the completion of the Padma Bridge, Mongla has become the closest port to the capital, facilitating the export of various products from the garment industry to Europe. The establishment of a rail connection to the port has opened new avenues for import and export. As Mongla Port offers faster and safer ship handling, both domestic and foreign businesses are increasingly interested in using the port. This has led to a steady rise in imports and exports through Mongla, with the port authority ensuring the safe and efficient handling of goods.
In the period from July to November of the 2024-25 fiscal year, Mongla Port handled 337 commercial ships, cleared and loaded 8,800 TEUs of containers, imported 5,292 vehicles, and facilitated the import and export of 4.485 million metric tons of cargo.
