Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh, Park Young-sik, emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation and collaboration with Dhaka in exploring new trade areas to enhance the existing ties between the two countries. He identified several potential sectors for collaboration, including footwear, ICT, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding and ship-breaking, blue economy, deep-sea fishing, agriculture, and agricultural machinery.
Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on Investment Services organized by the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Korea Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KBCCI) at a city hotel, Ambassador Park highlighted the significance of these sectors for both countries.
He particularly emphasized the role of South Korean collaboration in the Bangladesh RMG (Ready-Made Garments) sector, which has been instrumental in driving bilateral ties over the past fifty years. However, he also noted significant developments in diversifying cooperation beyond the RMG sector, including in manufacturing and infrastructure.
Ambassador Park mentioned that the trade ministries of both countries are currently discussing the possibility of initiating negotiations for a bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). He expressed optimism that such an agreement would significantly boost trade and investment between Bangladesh and South Korea.
In addition, the ambassador proposed the establishment of a mechanism for regular discussions on the business climate twice a year. This would facilitate ongoing dialogue and collaboration between businesses in both countries, further enhancing economic relations and fostering mutual growth.
