In May 2024, Bangladesh's general point-to-point inflation rate slightly increased to 9.89 percent, driven primarily by continuous rises in food prices. This is up from 9.74 percent in April and slightly lower than the 9.94 percent recorded in March. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) released these figures in their monthly consumer price index.

The point-to-point food inflation rate saw an increase to 10.76 percent in May, up from 10.22 percent in April. Conversely, the point-to-point non-food inflation rate slightly declined to 9.19 percent in May from 9.34 percent in April.

Urban areas experienced a slight rise in the general inflation rate, which reached 9.72 percent in May. In rural areas, the general inflation rate was higher at 9.99 percent. Specifically, rural food inflation rose to 10.73 percent in May from 10.25 percent in April, while rural non-food inflation dropped to 9.31 percent from 9.60 percent in the previous month.

In urban regions, food inflation increased to 10.86 percent in May from 10.19 percent in April. Urban non-food inflation also showed a minor rise to 9.03 percent in May compared to 9.01 percent in April.

Additionally, the national wage index rate experienced a growth of 9.89 percent in May, reaching 122.04 points, compared to a growth of 9.74 percent and 122.30 points in April.
