The government has decided to appoint Ahsan H Mansur as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank, succeeding Abdur Rouf Talukder. Mansur confirmed the news, mentioning that he had discussed the appointment with the finance adviser. Sources within the financial institution division have indicated that the age limit for the position of governor, previously set at 67 years, is likely to be removed soon.

Introducing Ahsan H Mansur

Dr. Ahsan H Mansur began his career in 1976 as a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Dhaka University. He later pursued higher studies in Canada, where he also taught undergraduate economics courses at the University of Western Ontario from 1978 to 1981. Mansur joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its Economist Program in 1981 and completed his PhD in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in 1982.

Throughout his extensive career at the IMF, Dr. Mansur worked in various countries across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Central America. He held key positions in the Fiscal Affairs, Policy Review and Development departments, as well as in area departments such as the Middle East and Central Asia. He also served as the IMF Senior Resident Representative to Pakistan from 1998 to 2001 and as a fiscal adviser to Bangladesh's finance minister from 1989 to 1991, where he played a crucial role in introducing Value Added Tax (VAT) in Bangladesh.

Dr. Mansur's last role at the IMF was as Division Chief of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Division, where he served as the IMF Mission Chief for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman. After retiring early from the IMF, he co-founded the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh and became its executive director, focusing on policy analysis. He is also a prolific author, having published extensively in prestigious journals.
