Dhaka, Aug 31 (V7N) - On August 31, 1957, Malaysia, then known as Malaya, achieved independence from the United Kingdom, a milestone marked by the historic proclamation of freedom by the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. As "Merdeka" echoed seven times, a new sovereign nation was born.
Today, Malaysia stands as an upper middle-income country with a robust economic performance. In 2023, Malaysia experienced a growth of 3.7 percent, reflecting a moderation after the post-COVID economic rebound of 2022. The nation continues to be a prominent destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), attracting a total of US$39.7 billion in investments. This year, Malaysia's economy has shown steady growth, bolstered by increased exports, rising tourist arrivals, and significant investment activities. Notably, in Q2’24, Malaysia’s economy grew by 5.9% year-on-year, a significant improvement from 4.2% in the previous quarter and the highest since Q4 2022’s 7.4%.
Malaysia’s longstanding relationship with Bangladesh dates back to January 31, 1972, when Malaysia became the first Muslim nation to formally recognize Bangladesh. This “brotherly” bond has flourished over the years. During the recent formation of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim was among the first to extend congratulations to Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as Chief Advisor, offering Malaysia’s support to the new Bangladeshi Government.
Bangladesh holds a prominent position in Malaysia’s trade network, being the 19th largest trading partner and the 16th largest export destination. The proposed Malaysia-Bangladesh Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is anticipated to further enhance business relations and prepare both economies for future challenges.
Malaysia invites Bangladeshi tourists to explore its diverse offerings, from leisure to medical tourism, with its advanced and affordable healthcare facilities. Additionally, Malaysia has become a sought-after educational destination for Bangladeshi students seeking quality education in an inclusive environment.
