Dhaka, September 03- Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury of the School of Business and Economics at North South University has been appointed as the new Chairman of Grameen Bank. The Financial Institutions Department of the Finance Ministry issued the appointment notification on Tuesday, confirming his tenure for the next three years.

This appointment comes in the wake of significant political changes in Bangladesh, with the recent fall of Sheikh Hasina's government leading to the cancellation of the appointment of the former Chairman, AKM Saiful Majid. Majid, who was reappointed to Grameen Bank last April, will now step down to make way for Professor Chowdhury.

Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury is a seasoned academic with extensive experience in both teaching and administration. Before his current role at North South University, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of PrimeAsia University and Eastern University. His contributions as Dean and Syndicate member of the North South University School of Business are well-regarded in academic circles.

Beyond his roles in Bangladesh, Professor Chowdhury has also taught in Canada and the United States and has engaged in numerous research projects across various fields. His international experience and research background are expected to bring a strategic and innovative approach to the leadership of Grameen Bank.

The appointment of Professor Chowdhury marks a new chapter for Grameen Bank as it navigates a period of change and aims to strengthen its mission of empowering the economically disadvantaged through microfinance.
