Dhaka, Dec 30 (V7N) — Postgraduate trainee doctors have announced their return to work following the issuance of a government notification regarding an increase in their monthly allowance.
Dr Md Nurunnabi, general secretary of the Doctors’ Movement for Justice, confirmed the decision on Monday.
“We will withdraw our protest and return to work starting Tuesday, said Dr Nurunnabi.
The doctors emphasized that instead of repeated protests, there should be a permanent solution to the issue of allowances.
Trainee doctors had been demonstrating for a long time, demanding their monthly allowance be increased to Tk50,000.
On Sunday, they blocked Shahbagh throughout the day to press their demand.
The Ministry of Finance on Monday announced a significant increase in the allowance for post-graduate trainee doctors, raising it by 30%.
The new allowance has been set at Tk35,000, effective from July 1, 2025.
Prior to that, starting from December 23, the allowance was increased from Tk25,000 to Tk30,000.
The announcement was made through two separate notifications signed by Syed Ali Bin Hassan, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Finance, on Monday.
According to the notification for institutions affiliated with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the monthly stipend for both resident and non-resident trainees—whether private or unpaid—has been raised by 20%, from Tk25,000 to Tk30,000. This change came into effect on December 23.
Additionally, a separate notification stated that the same increase applies to unpaid trainees who have passed the first part of the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) examination under the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS).
